Rhetorical Analysis of WuDunn’s TED Talk

After listening to Sheryl, I realized that gender unequal treatment is such a significant problem in the world. Since large number of women are being killed by this problem, we are not allowed to ignore this problem. However, since mostly the problem exist because of the lack of property, I think this problem can be solved when people pay enough attention on it. Being a Chinese person, I know the situation like Dai Manju in China. As we all know, China is a large population country, and it is hard for the government to take care of every single person in the country. Turns out some people who are in countryside become poorer and poorer and they will never leave their hometown because of the lack of education and the ability of paying tuition.
The thing most struck me is the picture of the emaciated girl from Ethiopia. When Sheryl said the girl’s brothers in her family were totally fine, I was shock because I can’t believe there is such a huge gap between different genders in some places on the earth. Then I understood why Sheryl put this problem on the table—there shouldn't be any discrimination in the world.
When I was listening to Sheryl, I thought she was a skilled speaker because she has a clearly order in her mind. When she was presenting, there was not a pause of her thoughts. She provided her idea fluently with some effective and shock but related pictures. This way, she affected the audiences efficiently.
When she was providing some information that was relaxed, she gave the speech with a smile and laughter might come out sometimes. However, when she was talking about something that was sad and miserable, her voice became quiet and low, so everyone was attracted and made to think about that problem. According to these things I think she is a skilled speaker.
In Sheryl’s speech, the main idea that she provides is women shouldn't be problem, instead, women can be solution. To improve the main idea, she provided two real personal examples, Mahabuba, who stank because of the pregnant when she was 13, and Saima, who could only born girls. In their families, these two were absolutely the problem because they can now born male baby. However, Mhabuba became a nurse and saved people’s lives and Saima started an embroidery and hired her husband at last. Finally, these two women changed from big problems for their families to solutions. These two examples really helped Sheryl to proof her main idea that women can become solution instead of problem.
At first, Sheryl provided challenges by using small lists, so the audience could realize how many things that she was providing. When she was done with providing, she told the audiences that she was going to talk about some solutions.
Sheryl used some transition such as “I've talked about some of the challenges, let me talk about some of the solutions” and “which brings me to the final element, which is education.” They are both good transitions that changed the viewing.

The theme of Sheryl’s speech was that women need help to become equal to men in the world. However, since some families are not rich enough and they thought it was not worth to spend limit money on their daughters, who might only need to born babies and do something besides academic. So the purpose of her speech is appealing people to contribute on those poor girls who couldn't be educated.
