Proposal for Research

  For my research paper, I might want to talk about the situation that some people's human rights are being violated today. It can be showing which kinds of people are vulnerable and in which way their human rights are easily violated. In those resources what I have read, Global Woman, International Human Rights and the handout of Nigeria can be some helpful resources that can be used to provide some related information.I am talking about what kind of people are easily violated and how they are being violated because people are lacking of the knowledge of human rights nowadays. As a result, some people are living under other's cruel controlled while the human rights can give them a better lives. For me, everyone living in the world is equal, the balance keeps the world harmonious, so it is necessary to let people know more about human rights.

Girls Are Not Buffalo

            These days I was shown a movie of girls who play Muay Thai in Thailand. In this movie, I saw a young girl Stam, a really young Thai girl, goes fight Muay Thai to earn money and supports her family. You might want to know how Stam, the girl who fights Muay Thai, looks like. Actually, this young girl has a very skinny body with only 22 kilograms weigh. In general, a girl especially with such a weak body is not able to participate in drastic sports such as boxing and Muay Thai. However, Stam has to fight with other girl since her family is not rich and her parents are building a new house with the lack of money. Although playing Muay Thai is the best way for Stam to support her family since she has been training for many years and she has won 3 champion in the past, in my view, Stam should not be a part of Muay Thai, instead, her parents should protect her well and find another way to earn the money they need.

            In the UNCRC, the article 32 (Child Labour) mentions: “The government should protect children from work that is dangerous or might harm their health or their education.” In the Buffalo Girls, I saw a frame that Stam was being punched right into her face.

It is totally reasonable that a girl wants to help her family by her own way even if she might get hurt because of this way, yet it is not allowed for the parents to send their children to any works are dangerous since kids are easily injured and injury is harmful to their health while their bodies are growing up. I really don’t want to mention that Stam’s rights are being violated because of the Muay Thai, the sports her parents send her to play, on the other hand, Stam should stop playing Muay Thai right away and she deserve the best protection that her parents and government can provide during the entire adolescence.

            I appreciate the way that Stam is helping her family since they are not rich for sure, however, it might be the time that they need to come out with a new idea to earn the money instead of sending Stam to this drastic game. Because girls are girls, not buffaloes.

Nomination: As I was searching some books about human trafficking, the first book come into my eye is the God in a Brothel written by Daniel Walker. In this book, Daniel Walker is writing something about the slaves in the brothel were traded of trafficked and having miserable lives. Since I just read the Little Bee, I think I can know more things about slaves from this book. Being an undercover investigator, Daniel Walker is able to tell me the most real story about slaves in the world. According to the introduction of this book, Daniel is also writing something about how people can rescue those people being slaved or trafficked, so I think this book can be useful that I may be able to learn something about saving people’s lives someday.

Oil was found in Nigeria in 1956, however, after being found, some oil companies came and rapidly expanded oil industry.
The trend of being expanded oil industry by other countries is uncontrollable, yet the Nigerian government still tried to announce a round of field licensing for those companies.
And the oil companies, for example, the Shell, disrespects Nigeria while digging Nigerian oil, they were admitted spilling so much crude oil in the creek.

Comparison Between WuDunn and Bales’ Presentations

       “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.” This is a quote that talks about the human rights comes from UDHR. These days I have listened to two remarkable TED presentations which are majorly talking about gender inequality and slavery, two main problems about human rights, from WuDunn and Bales. I believer no one wants get into human rights’ problems since these kinds of problems ruin people’s lives. In WuDunn and Bales’ presentations, they both give audiences problems of the world that might be easily ignored. For WuDunn, she provides something shows how serious the sexual inequality problem is over the world. And Bales, who has an idea that if everybody joins in, the matter of global slavery can be effectively controlled. To compare these two presenters, I think that Bales is a better presenter than WuDunn in many ways since he provides a more effective presentation than WuDunn with a more correct mood, more kinds of evidences and a better organization on the whole graph of the work.

       Talking about the influence of the presentation, Bales does a better job on it, since he has a better pre stage work by giving audiences a correct emotion that is serious. WuDunn provides a picture of her family, includes her husband, her child and herself, at the beginning of her presentation. To be honest, this action can make audience feel more amiable for sure. However, comparing to Bales’ presentation, which is mostly using official statistics and objective information, WuDunn makes me feel like she is just making a chat with audiences instead of requiring people pay more attentions on the problem since the problem is really serious like Bales does. I am not saying it is a bad idea to make a relaxed condition for audiences, yet if you want your audiences be more focus on the problem that is not that fun, it is a better way that you let them be serious at the beginning of your presentation, so they will not miss any words that you are going to provide.

       Making a presentation, the first thing you need to think about is, like I just provided, making a right environment for your audiences. However, when you are going further of the presentation, the audiences’ emotions are not going to make your presentation much more convincing. The statistic or something objective may help. In WuDunn’s presentation, I have seen many pictures of poor girls and ladies who she is trying to talk about. Both of WuDunn’s pictures show the audiences that there are so many women in the world suffering from gender inequality which makes them have less things than other men own. Yet, the pictures provided by WuDunn might be too simple and simplex, mostly I am watching how miserable those women are in the world. On the other hand, Bales provides a picture that makes me deeply memorize. The thing I am talking about is the map of countries that slavery exists in the world. As we all know, earth, the planet we are living on, is really a huge planet for human being. Nowadays, there are 193 countries all over the world, however, the map shows that Iceland and Greenland are only two countries that slavery problem doesn’t exist in. According to this small map, the seriousness of slavery problem all over the word is self-evident because the map gives a huge overview of the whole world, not some pictures of some specific area in the world. Since Bales also uses some horrible photos that shoe how miserable the slaves are, the proofs that Bales is using seems lightly more convincing.

       Besides the environment and the proof, there is one thing that also help audiences to get into the presentation, the clear organization. For me, both WuDunn and Bales are doing a brilliant work on organizing. However, I am more taking the way that Bales are using—focusing on giving people clearer organization on whole things than on details as WuDunn. For WuDunn, she tries using small list to organize the ideas, this thing is what Bales doesn’t use, and it is really helpful because the small list can tell audiences that how manys ideas she is going to provide to them. On the other hand, Bales organizes the whole essay by using some short and clear transitions, and it makes me feel more comfortable while reading his work since the transitions tell me what will be the next on following paragraph. At first, “So, I begin to do a research project of my own”, he presents that only few people knows the slavery problem in today’s world. Since that he provides a map that shows almost the world has slavery problem. When people are doubting that it might not be so many slaves in the world, he provides some reasons such as the lack of protection to vulnerable people so that people will understand why the number of slaves is so huge. After that, he introduces some basic information of the slavery, how slavery traffickers lie to people and get them to become slaves, what is the prices of slaves in both past and present society, and what will the slavery market become if people just let it develop. At last, after showing so many things about negative effects of slavery, he appeal audiences to pay more attentions on this problem and help those people who are in slavery out and rebuild their own homes. So I think both WuDunn and Bale do really well on organizing their presentation because I have got their main ideas very easily. But Bales is even better because of his overall sorting.

       All in all, Bales does a better job than WuDunn. Nonetheless, WuDunn’s presentation is also very attractive since she is speaking for the women that are being treated unequally, and she is a woman as well which can make her understand more how women feel when they are being treated badly. I appreciate that I am so luck to hear to these two people by their interesting presentations. After listening to them, I realize that there are some people in the other places of the world leading totally different lives comparing to myself. I wish I will be able to help them by myself someday in the future.

How to combat modern slavery

According to the presentation of Kevin about modern slavery, slavery in the world is really a huge problem of the world since it is totally against the human rights. Mostly, the narrator is talking about how serious slavery this problem is. And he shows how miserable those people in slavery are by using some pictures and describing the real lives of those people. At last, what was surprising me, was that he didn’t ask people to donate money and buy slaves from slaveholders. Instead he suggests people to help those people who are rescued to rebuild their own homes. Therefore, those people can also have their own dignity back. And rebuilding home can also make those people invulnerable. So I think rebuilding home for those people is really a good idea, which is much more effective than buying people from slavery traffickers.

For me, Kevin is a pretty skilled rhetor because he is presenting his idea in order and that makes me feel easy to get his information. At first, he presents that only few people knows the slavery problem in today’s world. Since that he provides a map that shows almost the world has slavery problem. When people are doubting that it might not be so many slaves in the world, he provides some reasons such as the lack of protection to vulnerable people so that people will understand why the number of slaves is so huge. After that, he introduces some basic information of the slavery, how slavery traffickers lie to people and get them to become slaves, what is the prices of slaves in both past and present society, and what will the slavery market become if people just let it develop. At last, after showing so many things about negative effects of slavery, he appeal audiences to pay more attentions on this problem and help those people who are in slavery out and rebuild their own homes. According to this, I think this is a well-organized presentation, and Kevin is a skilled rhetor.

Kevin’s central contention is absolutely that people should help slaves to get out from slavery and rebuild their lives. In the presentation, he is uses many related information to proof his viewpoints. For example, when he is trying to show how large is the range of slavery existing in the world, he uses a map that tells me only Iceland and Greenland are not the places that slavery exists. As a result, I can see that slavery appears on almost the whole world from the map. And then, even he doesn’t have to point out his opinion, I know he is trying to tell me slavery is too huge a problem to be ignored.

At 5:07, he uses a whole paragraph as a transition. Before the transition, he was talking about the main cause of slavery is the lack of protection of the vulnerable. In the transition, he says that the situation of slavery he introduced was precisely what has happened in the world. Then he says that a lot of people come into slavery not because of the knocked over the head as he just provided, however, they come into slavery because someone asks them a question. After that, a paragraph that says mostly people are asked if they need a job and then those people were taken to become slaves. Without the transition paragraph, those two paragraphs before and after the transition are not able to be connected.

When Kevin is trying to say there are too many people in the world, he uses “the population explodes” to present it. And I think this is a really interesting way to say too many population.
